Word’s largest concentrated solar power plant
Noor Solar Power Station is a large ambitious project initiated by Morocco almost a decade ago.
Nour is a solar power complex and auxiliary diesel fuel system located in Morocco, 10 kilometres from Ouarzazate town. At 580 MW, it is the world’s largest concentrated solar power (CSP) plant. The total project’s estimated cost is around $2.5 billion
The Noor Solar Power Station is one of the world’s largest concentrated solar power plants. With a total capacity of 580 MW, it is capable of supplying electricity to over 1 million people and reducing Morocco’s carbon emissions by 760,000 tons per year.
The project, which began construction in 2013 and was completed in 2018, is a collaboration between the Moroccan government and the European Union, with a total cost of €9 billion. The plant uses a combination of concentrated solar power (CSP) and photovoltaic (PV) technology to generate electricity. The CSP portion of the plant uses mirrors to focus sunlight onto a central tower, where it is then converted into heat and used to generate electricity through a steam turbine. The PV portion of the plant uses solar panels to directly convert sunlight into electricity.
The Noor Solar Power Station is part of Morocco’s larger goal to generate 52% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. The country has also set a goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 32% by 2030. The Noor Solar Power Station is a crucial step in achieving these goals, and it serves as a model for other countries looking to invest in renewable energy.
The plant also generates jobs and income for the local population and farmers by buying locally produced goods and services, providing training and education programs and developing local small businesses. The project also has a positive impact on the local environment by reducing the need for fossil fuels and by creating new green spaces.
Noor Solar Power Station in Morocco is a major achievement in the field of renewable energy and serves as a model for other countries looking to transition to clean energy sources. It not only helps to reduce carbon emissions and achieve Morocco’s renewable energy goals, but also has a positive impact on the local economy and environment.
