Chinese firm plans a hydrogen project in Morocco
Energy China International Construction Group, a Chinese energy engineering procurement and construction contractor, has announced plans to develop a major green hydrogen project in Morocco. The company has signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi conglomerate Ajlan Bros and Morocco’s Gaia Energy to build a green ammonia plant in the south of the North African nation, with a future output of 1.4 million tonnes per annum.
The plant will be powered by a 2 GW photovoltaic solar plant and a 4 GW wind power project, with the project partners also responsible for the operation and maintenance of the facilities once the project is completed.
Morocco has attracted a lot of attention lately for its potential in providing green energy to Europe. It has also invested heavily in renewables and solar energy. It has launched few years ago the world’s largest concentrated solar power plan in the world.
The green hydrogen project is expected to provide clean energy to southern Morocco and Europe. This project marks another milestone for Energy China International Construction Group in expanding its presence in the renewable energy industry. The company has demonstrated its expertise in the field of energy engineering and procurement by signing this MoU to develop a green hydrogen project in North Africa.
Morocco’s Gaia Energy, a leading renewable energy project developer in Africa, will play a significant role in the development of the project. The company signed a strategic agreement with Israeli firm H2Pro last year to co-develop a gigawatt-scale green hydrogen project, starting with a pilot project using 10-20 MW-scale H2Pro electrolyser technology. With its experience and expertise in the renewable energy sector, Gaia Energy will be a valuable partner in the development of this project.
The green hydrogen project is an important step towards achieving the decarbonisation goals set by countries around the world. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, has the potential to become a major source of clean energy, replacing fossil fuels in many industries. The development of large-scale green hydrogen projects will be crucial in driving down the cost of production and making it a viable alternative to fossil fuels.
Overall, Energy China International Construction Group’s plan to develop a major green hydrogen project in North Africa represents a significant development in the renewable energy sector. The project will not only provide clean energy to southern Morocco and Europe but also contribute towards achieving global decarbonization goals.
